In the Black Hills, it is not uncommon to find yourself enjoying a midday picnic on the same grass that was covered by snow earlier that day. Autumn days tend to offer a wide range of weather conditions, which could make planning a family outing challenging. Luckily, with so much to do in places like Gillette, you can literally go where the wind blows you!
If a cold morning greets you, take advantage of indoor sites like the Rockpile Museum where curators seek to educate, enhance and immortalize the lifestyle and work ethic of the people of Campbell County. Offering permanent and rotating exhibits, children are invited to touch, climb, dress up and participate in age appropriate learning. While donations are appreciated, admission remains free during normal business hours, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday thru Saturday.

If you prefer to flex your creative muscles, contact Ava Community Art Center to inquire about their adult and children classes. With a full calendar that includes special events alongside regularly scheduled programming, you could find yourself making artful souvenirs surrounded by area professionals and their featured work. If your schedule doesn’t mesh with theirs, head over to Hands on Pottery where you simply choose your piece then decorate any way you like. This come and go option is ideal if you and your family enjoy a more flexible outing.
Finally, for dinner, treat yourself at The Prime rib, the area’s premier steak house and wine cellar. Their award winning wine list and well appointed menu offers something for everyone, even children. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the service is first class. Fortunately, after spending a day sight seeing, exploring and creating, you won’t have to worry about getting “dressed up” to enjoy this upscale, yet casual establishment.
Whether you choose to spend the day indoors or take advantage of our spectacular autumn weather outdoors, Gillette, Wyoming is happy to host your memory making!
