Working With Nature: Snow Fences #frifotos

Locals sometimes joke with tourists saying that the wooden fences seen  in fields are bleachers for watching antelope races. In fact, those structural snow fences protect roads from drifting snow. When snow-laden wind hits the fence, it slows and drops its snow. A small drift forms on the windward side and a long drift on the leeward side (toward the road). Ski resorts use the fences to create slopes and farmers use them to protect houses and store water.

#Frifotos is a weekly themed sharing photo chat started by Jonathan Opstein in October 2010. A new topic is announced each week with this week's theme being "Snow/Ice."

This is the way the snow blows in the winter time, and it is why they close the gates on the hiway.
Wyoming winters are a lot of snow and a lot of wind and ice. Good place to be is somewhere else or at home.
